Objectives of the preparation of the preparation of labile blood products (LBP)
The Labile Blood Products (LBP) preparation service works simultaneously with the Biological Qualification of Donation (QBD) laboratory, in order to make LBPs available to healthcare establishments as quickly as possible. It is located downstream of collection and upstream of distribution.
The preparation of LBPs is at the center of blood processing in any modern transfusion management structure. It makes it possible to separate the different constituents of blood (red blood cells, plasma and platelets), to increase therapeutic efficacy by only transfusing the constituents necessary for the patient's pathology, and to reduce the undesirable effects of transfusions. Before the establishment of the preparation service, all blood components were transfused at the same time. It was a whole blood transfusion.
Scientific developments have made it possible to adapt and create new techniques that have made it possible to reduce the risk for the recipient and to reduce the undesirable effects of transfusions (leukodepletion, viral attenuation, etc.).
Before any treatment on blood products from donations, the constituents of the blood (red cells, platelets and plasma) will be separated. This separation can be either carried out by the preparation department from whole blood donations, or carried out at the time of sampling during blood collections by apheresis machines. These apheresis carry out the separation of the constituents during the donation. The disadvantage is that the collection time is longer. Apheresis samples are mainly used for platelet or plasma donations.
