Storage of platelets and plasma from apheresis

STOCKAGE.jpg

Preservation of platelets after donation by apheresis does not pose a problem, because the products will be kept at 18°C to 24°C until their transfusion, this temperature avoiding alteration of the platelets. These platelet concentrates should also be kept under gentle agitation, to prevent the platelets from sticking together.

Plasma is also stored between 18°C and 24°C. At this temperature, as at 4°C, coagulation factors decrease. Only the freezing of products will allow the coagulation factors to be maintained. Thus, these products must be frozen quickly by the preparation department.

Unfortunately, between 18°C and 24°C, any germs present in the pockets multiply very quickly. In order to limit this risk, the pre-donation medical interview should rule out donors who have had a previous pathology.
